Sun safety in the tropics: choosing the right SPF

The UV index in Mauritius sits at extreme levels for much of the year, yet sunburn remains the most common holiday complaint. A little product knowledge goes a long way.

SPF, decoded

SPF measures protection against UVB, the burning rays. SPF 30 filters about 97 percent, SPF 50 about 98 percent. The bigger difference is how much you apply and how often: most people use half the amount tested, so reapplying every two hours matters more than chasing numbers.

Match the product to the person

  • Active adults: sport formulas like Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 stay put through sweat and swimming.
  • Faces: lighter, non-greasy formulas made for daily wear under moisturiser or makeup.
  • Children: dedicated kids' formulas are tear-free and easier to spread. Banana Boat Kids SPF 50 is the reference in our range.
  • Babies and sensitive skin: Wooden Spoon's organic Baby and Family SPF 50 uses mineral filters and certified organic ingredients.
  • After sun: aloe gels rehydrate the skin and extend a tan; keep one in the fridge.

The rules that matter

Apply 20 minutes before going out. Reapply after swimming. No sunscreen makes midday sun safe for babies; shade and clothing come first.
